This compound was found to be a powerful, allosteric effector of hemoglobin. It is also able to cross the plasma membrane of the red blood cells in whole blood samples, lowering the affinity of haemoglobin for oxygen. (Marc Aprahamian et al.; ChemBioChem 2011, 12, 777 – 783)
