mono-Methyl-Betanidin
mono-Methyl-Betanidin (Betanidin 2-methyl ester) is a mono-methyl ester derivative of betanidin, the aglycone of the red-violet betalain pigment betanin. The carboxyl group of the indoline (cyclo-DOPA) unit is esterified, while the 5,6-dihydroxyl (catechol) moiety and both carboxyl groups of the betalamic acid unit remain free. It is suitable for research on betalain chemistry and structure–activity relationships of betacyanins.

mono-Methyl-Betanidin (Betanidin 2-methyl ester) is a semi-synthetic derivative of betanidin (CAS 2181-76-2), the aglycone of betanin and the basic structural unit of the betacyanins. Betacyanins are formed by condensation of betalamic acid with cyclo-DOPA. In this compound, the C2 carboxyl group of the cyclo-DOPA unit is present as a methyl ester.
The 5,6-dihydroxyl (catechol) moiety is retained. In the parent compound betanidin, this moiety is responsible for the low oxidation potential and high antioxidant activity (Wybraniec et al.). The C15 and C17 carboxyl groups remain free.
Betanidin 2-methyl ester can serve as a reference compound for the analysis of betalain derivatives and for structure–activity studies on the role of the carboxyl groups in betacyanin chemistry. Biological data for this specific ester have not been published to our knowledge.
